CHAPTER 10: THE HAUNTED FOREST

I spent hours getting poked and prodded by the ER staff. In an effort to protect my dignity, they got a floating nurse I didn’t know to come in and do a rape kit. I insisted that I hadn’t been raped, but I was encouraged to do a kit, anyway, since I’d said there were gaps in my memory. They even took scrapings from my fingernails. I didn’t think that they’d find much exciting underneath my nails, except for sediments that belonged a dozen feet down in the earth, but I let them. I put my clothes in an evidence bag and was finally allowed to shower.

I refused to let them take the necklace from me, insisting that it was mine and sentimental. I stood in the hospital shower, watching the shell of dirt rinse from my body and reveal unmarked flesh beneath. I was new, scrubbed hard, as if I were emerging from the shadow of vampirism back into real life. It was like a dream, a dream that I could escape. Wasn’t it?

Kara brought me clothes in a gym bag, gear she must’ve stashed in her car for workouts. I donned a set of her pink sweats and sparkly silver sneakers. I decided to go commando and braless, as there was no way that I could fill out one of Kara’s bras. I tied my hair up with one of her sequined scrunchies and waited in the room for whatever was next.

The head of surgery stopped by. I had never seen Dr. Mrzack in anything other than a skirt suit or perfectly ironed scrubs. Tonight, she was wearing a T-shirt proclaiming her love for pierogis, ripped-out jeans, and a leather motorcycle jacket. She held the helmet under her arm as she stood in my exam room.

“Take whatever time you need,” she said. “You’ll be on paid administrative leave as long as necessary. There’s no reason to be thinking about returning to work now.”

I anticipated that they would handle me with kid gloves, given that my abduction had happened on hospital grounds. Legal had to be shitting a brick about liability. But I lifted my chin. “I think it would be best if I get back to work as soon as I can, though I’ll want to make some changes to my schedule.”

“Anything you need,” she said.

I got set up to work nights. And Dr. Mrzack gave me half-dozen cards for employee assistance program psychologists who specialized in trauma. I promised to give one of them a call, and Dr. Mrzack disappeared. Moments later, I heard the loud grumbling of a motorcycle in the parking lot.

I leaned back against a pillow. Tonight was full of surprises.

Gibson and the hospital’s security chief Skye came into the room. Skye regarded me with gentle concern.

“I’m so sorry that this happened to you,” she said. “But I’m glad to have you back.”

“Thank you,” I said.

Skye nodded at Gibson. “Detective Gibson has filled me in on what happened. We have
